In Loving Memory Antonio Aguilar
He was born in the small town of Tayahua in the state of Zacatecas, near Villanueva. The story goes that he entered the United States as an illegal alien and that he slept for three days in the Plazita Olvera or Olvera Street in Los Angeles, California.[citation needed] He began his acting career during the Golden Era of Mexican Cinematography. He is credited with exposing the sport of la charrería, considered to have originated in Mexico to international audiences.
Antonio Aguilar went to Puerto Rico where he performed in rodeos and concerts. He made many movies and has been compared to American Western actors like Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. This is because Aguilar's charro or cowboy movies entail romantic ballads with him getting the gal. Amongst his best movies are Caballo Prieto Azabache and Bala Perdida. Antonio has appeared in American Western films like 1969's The Undefeated starring John Wayne.
Antonio was married to legendary actress Flor Silvestre, and one of their children, José "Pepe" Aguilar, is among Mexico's most popular modern singers. He frequently performed at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena in Los Angeles before curtailing his performances with Flor Silvestre. He is currently the only Hispanic personality to ever sell out the Madison Square Garden for six consecutive nights. On Monday June 4, 2007, the singer, actor, producer, and composer was taken to a local hospital in Mexico City, due to a pulmonary infection. On Monday June 18, 2007 Doctors announced that Antonio was no longer responding to treatment, and was expected to pass away before the end of the night. On Tuesday June 19, 2007, the doctor spoke out to the media that Mr. Aguilar was still alive and his body was responding to the medication, but was still in critical condition. While there, the family received visits from many famous people including Vicente Fernandez. It has also been said that when Don Antonio Aguilar passes, his body will be taken to Zacatecas and they will be holding the funeral at El Cathedral de Zacatecas. He will always be remembered as an idol to the Mexican public.
Antonio Aguilar, 88 years old, passed away on June 19, 2007 at 11:45 pm after being 15 days in a hospital in Mexico. He was diagnosed with pneumonia.
