Most Talented Hip Hop Latinos Take Center Stage at Batalla de los Gallos in Los Angeles

Top Four Latino MCs in Los Angeles Advance to the National Finals in Los Angeles at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena on October 3, 2008

The first international freestyle emcee (MC) competition in Latin Hip Hop history burst onto the Latin Hip Hop scene in Los Angeles this Friday as the Batalla de los Gallos Los Angeles qualifier was host to an enthusiastic crowd of over 450 Los Angelinos searching for the most talented Latino Hip Hop stars in southern California. “El Flaquito de Puerto Rico,” Sami Cultura, is one of these rising artists, but not simply because of his tremendous talent. Sami Cultura is now the winner of the 2008 regional qualifier in Los Angeles and he is on his way, along with three other regional qualifier finalists, to the National Finals in Los Angeles at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena on October 3, 2008.

After an exciting battle, filled with style and improvisation against fellow finalist Ruidazo, Sami Cultura defeated him along with the rest of the competitors in a freestyle rap battle full of energy and rhythm Latin style unseen in the history of this competition. From this L.A. qualifier, Sami Cultura will be joined by fellow finalists Ruidazo (Mexican), El Comanche (El Salvadoran), and El Elemento (Colombian) in one of the most diverse set of national finalists to battle rap solely in Spanish in order to become the “Gallo Mayor” of all of Latin Hip Hop.

“I knew it would be a difficult battle, but I was more than ready,” said Sami Cultura, winner of the L.A. Batalla de los Gallos qualifier. “All of my fellow MCs did a great job, but they needed more to defeat me. I want to be the best ‘Gallo Mayor in the world’ and open the doors to a promising and rich career in Latin Hip Hop.”

Club 740 in downtown Los Angeles was host to this intense competition with doors opening at 8 p.m. on Friday, August 22, 2008. With participants preparing to battle rap, hundreds of Latin Hip Hop fans lined the boxing ring, fueling the energy and vibe from these modern-day trovadores (poets) with improvised lyrics, rhythm, and rhyme to the backdrop of Latin Hip Hop.

“The Gallos only had one minute every battle to demonstrate and express their skills against their opponent,” said Xavier “JDubs” Villalobos, judge at the L.A. Batalla de los Gallos qualifier. “These talented young Latinos have the opportunity to compete with legends of Latin Hip Hop that have come before them and now with the greatest potential to represent our community, culture and our language.”

With issues like family, community, and fashion, each Gallo faced a stiff competition with the very best Latin Hip Hop MCs in the city. Along with the most well respected judges in the Latin Hip Hop scene, who had a difficult task of weeding out the most determined and creative, all four finalists now have the opportunity to become the National U.S. Batalla de los Gallos winner to represent our country in the International Finals in Mexico City on October 24, 2008.

Created in 2005, Batalla de los Gallos is the first international MC freestyle competition in the world to offer a platform for hundreds of Latino Hip Hop artists to express their originality and artistic freedom, enriched with culture and life experiences. Latin Hip Hop has certainly risen in the music scene and has evolved with its own set of history unique to any other forms of Hip Hop. Red Bull Batalla de los Gallos is also an opportunity to bring together all countries from Latin America, Europe, and the United States, which this year includes Mexico, Venezuela, Panama, Spain, Ecuador, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Colombia and the United States.
