Manu Chao to Make Rare U.S. TV Appearance on Sat.(01-24-09) Night on PBS/Austin City Limits

Manu Chao will make a rare U.S. television appearance Saturday night, January 24th, with a full performance on Austin City Limits on PBS. To coincide with the special premiere, a new ‘La Vida Tombola’ EP will be released at iTunes tomorrow. The EP includes the original track, a special stripped down version recorded at Abbey Road Studios as well as the music video. The video for the hit tribute to soccer legend Diego Maradona features footage of Manu and Maradona together in Buenos Aires in addition to vintage footage of Maradona playing. “La Vida Tombola” is off Manu Chao’s Latin Grammy-winning ‘La Radiolina,’ which was also recently certified Gold by the RIAA.

The friendship between Manu Chao and Diego Maradona goes back to the day the young Manu first saw the equally young Maradona dribble a soccer ball with his magic left foot. Manu first paid tribute to Maradona in 1994 with the song “Santa Maradona,” from the last Mano Negra album. “La Vida Tombola” is the soundtrack to the symbolic renaissance of a redeemed Maradona, who spun into a whirlwind of drugs, excess, dieting, Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro, and now stands proud despite the tackles he has weathered both inside and outside the stadium.

“La Vida Tombola” is featured in a documentary about the life of Maradona by the famed Serbian director Emir Kusturica. The film was part of the official selection at Cannes in 2008 and will be released later this year.
